Jacki grows what she sells and sells through the SLO Flower Collective. One acre in Arroyo Grande, and seventeen hundred specialty dahlias in it, by her own count on ratherrooted.com. Dahlias, in quantity and in every direction: magenta, fuchsia, butter yellow, and a pale blush that barely registers as pink until you hold it against the rest.

What the photographs show is the part I like best: the bouquet is wrapped and handed over standing in the field it came out of. The flowers had a few minutes of travel, not a few days of it, and you can tell.
